Miles Batt 2
While the work of Miles Batt 2 certainly has roots in Lowbrow art, there seems to be some classical artistic training put to use in these artworks. The line between low and high art is blurred giving way to a new subclass of pieces that are defined as Pop Surrealism. While Surrealism is based on dreams and the unconscious, Pop Art depicts the mundane and the superficial. Here the best from each is taken and combined into works that deliver popular and cartoon-like imagery with some remarkable artistic skills.
Simultaneous to the Pop Surrealsim Miles Batt 2 explores Abstract Expressionism. The Abstract Expressionist movement is characterized by energetic and emotive applications of paint, either with brushes or applied directly to the canvas by dripping and staining. Although the Abstract Expressionists rejected the representation of earlier modernist movements, they insisted on the importance of a subject, often drawing inspiration from the universal imagery of myth. The choices made by this artist to include recognizable objects in his color and line covered paintings stimulates thought about the significance of the objects that surround us both naturally and purposefully.
